Regional Rock Walls

Regional Rock Walls

We, as an apartment, headed over to Regional Rock Walls last night to escape the cold weather and also the boredom of being off-track. I was very surprised by how much fun this place was. By the end of the night, I still wanted to climb, but I physically couldn’t because my body was so tired. If you’re looking for something to do on a boring Rexburg evening, this is a great place to check out! The best part is that they’re open until 11:00pm. On Thursdays, they offer $5 climbing per person. This includes the harness and the shoes that you’ll be using during your climb.

I didn’t count how many different climbing routes were featured here, but there are quite a few each with varying levels of difficulty. Each was rated with a number to let you know how easy or difficult the climb is with a 5.7 being easy, and a 5.10 very difficult. Each of the “rocks” are color coded so you know which path to take while climbing.

The staff was really friendly and helpful in getting you all set up and teaching you how to use all of the equipment. They showed us how to tie the knots we needed, and how to belay another climber. At the same time, they weren’t condescending or belittling. They gave you a lot of freedom and really just allowed you to have fun. As far as I could tell, there was no time limit on the climbing. We got there around 7:30pm, and we climbed until we got tired and left around 9:30.

Along with rock climbing, Regional provides other challenges called “bouldering,” which is essentially the same thing as rock climbing, just without the ropes. It requires more body strength and skill. Mats are placed underneath in case you fall. Regional Rock Walls is actually located inside the Madison Gymnastics Center. If you get tired of rock climbing, you can always switch over and go tumbling on the mats on the other side of the gym.

The Martins began construction on the rock walls in December of 2008 and opened to the public in January of 2009. The walls have been changing and expanding ever since. You can visit their website here, which was just recently updated.
