Right off the bat, I’m just going to say that if you’re expecting something like the San Diego Zoo, you’re going to be wildly disappointed. However, the Tautphaus Park Zoo in Idaho Falls was SO much fun. We went on Saturday, and we had an absolutely blast. The park isn’t giant, but the amount of animals that can be seen was still more than enough to keep us satisfied.
We were able to see monkeys, zebras, hawks and eagles, penguins, otters, tigers, pigs, an assortment of wild birds, and so many more that I can’t remember at the moment. I’d recommend going after Memorial Day weekend, because then it’s warm enough to bring out some of the other animals that are more sensitive to the colder temperatures. We spent roughly two hours wandering through the park.
Food and drinks can be purchased in-park from the “Kookaburra Cafe,” although, as you can imagine, they’re definitely overpriced. Bathroom facilities are sufficient, and the park didn’t seem too overcrowded with people when we went. The entrance fee was $7 per person, although that was for adults, and I’m not sure what children would cost.
They have a children’s petting zoo, which allows the kids to pet donkeys, feed lambs, and see a few other animals. There’s also a gift shop to buy souvenirs if you’re into that sort of a thing. Birthday Parties can be held in the park if you’re interested in that as well.
Overall, I was very pleased with our experience at the Zoo in Idaho Falls. I wasn’t expecting much walking in, so I was pleasantly surprised when it far surpassed my expectations. If you’re looking for something to do for a few hours on the weekend, I’d give this park a 4/5.
